Manomet Cottage for Rent

If you are interested in renting this old-fashioned cottage south of Boston, please email me at patrick@theworld.com

This 100+-year-old cottage is an ideal base for oceanfront relaxation, easy access to sightseeing: whale-watching, antiquing, golf, touring historic homes (some of which date to the 1600s,) beachcombing, and swimming. Situated in a verdant setting with incomparable rustic decor, Chandler Cottage is one of the last remaining cottages of its kind.

Chandler Cottage is a delight, with its panoramic ocean views and beautiful timber frame design, 14-foot open ceilings, heavy hewn trusses, unfinished wood beams, interesting rooms, and many amenities such as:

  •  Fully functioning fireplace with firewood provided
  •  Full touch-tone telephone service
  •  Ceiling fans upstairs and down
  •  Cable TV
  •  DVD player
  •  Stereo CD player
  •  Microwave
  •  Convection Oven
  •  Refrigerator
  •  Cooking utensils and linens provided

Surfcasting fishing rods are available for those who want to try their hand at pulling in the evening's dinner of bluefish or striped bass.

Entering from the parking area (with its own version of Plymouth Rock) and up the stairs to the 9-foot-wide wraparound "piazza" you'll see the breathtaking view sweeping from Plymouth Harbor to your left, to the Race Point Lighthouse across Cape Cod Bay all the way to Provincetown on a clear night.

Stepping inside the Chandler Cottage, you'll enter the great room with its 14-foot stone fireplace, timber trusses, and hardwood-planked ceiling. Eclectically decorated, the great room has refinished red pine floors with hand-forged nails, an antique breakfront with glass doors (reflecting the ocean view.) and cable TV with Internet access. The kitchen has an old-fashioned feel, but has the conveniences of a Propane gas stove and oven, 56-gallon hot water heater, and microwave; new faucets and sprayer add to the convenience of living in an older home like this. The Chandler Cottage was completely rewired in 2003 and all the windows on the second floor have been replaced as well; a 3-speed ceiling fan cools the 6 upstairs bedrooms on the occasional nights when the ocean breeze doesn't do the job. Another ceiling fan cools the great room.

The second floor reflects a bygone era. Six bedrooms which once served as the "dormitory" for the Chandler family who once owned the entire *Manomet* Point area are rustic: the ¾ walls are wood and go up only 10 feet; perhaps this was to allow the night breeze to pass easily, cooling the house naturally, or perhaps the boys just didn't need all that much privacy. A hallway passes from the Master bedroom at the east to the bathroom at the west. Two rooms (on the north side with ocean view) share a walk-through closet and two rooms on the south side are connected in a U-shape. All the 4 double and 2 single beds are antiques but the mattresses and box springs are modern. An Areo blow-up double bed is also available for those last-minute guests. This newly renovated cottage has a bath upstairs with a shower. The half bathroom downstairs has a washer-dryer for your convenience.

Three sides of the cottage are flanked with doors that open to the roomy deck (or "piazza" in local parlance). This porch has tables, chairs, benches, a wide swing and hammock enough to accommodate many guests and visitors. We have slept 15 people at one time and served dinner to 17 without breaking a sweat. Just up the road, you will find the wonderful Lobster Pound and its variety of fresh seafood; lobsters and crabs are cooked for your convenience and packed in insulated boxes at no extra charge.

The Chandler Cottage is secluded: high above the beach, a private driveway takes you to an area with ample parking, close to the house. The *Manomet* area is not known for fences between properties so you may get a few waves from the neighbors. You reach White Horse Beach in about two minutes, using the wooden staircase across *Manomet* Point Road. The level bluff above the water is memorable spot for croquet, bocce, Frisbee, sunbathing, and relaxation. See 4th of July *fireworks* (as well as firework displays on some other summer days) as they explode over Plymouth harbor.

You may think this is just a summertime place, but this ocean view lodge, besides being ideal for summer vacationing, is beautiful and peaceful in the Spring and Autumn. This house (sometimes called "The Mansion" by the locals) is heated by its fireplace, warming the dramatic space, and lighting most areas with warm firelight. If you are looking for a getaway in the off-season months and would be content to tuck in to a gorgeous, fireside nirvana with ocean views, this is your place.

Just a few miles north is the historic town of Plymouth, with Plymouth Rock, Plimoth Plantation (like a trip in a time-machine to 1620) antique shops, fish restaurants, lobster fleet, whale-watching and deep sea fishing cruises. Just off *Manomet* Point Road is the *Manomet* Conservation Center. See http://www.manomet.org/ for more information on this world-renowned ecological organization. The Pinehills golf course nearby as well.

Cape Cod is 10 miles to the south. Just over the Sagamore Bridge is Sandwich (one of the Cape's most charming towns) with its glass museum, Heritage Plantation, antique shops, historic homes, and restaurants, like the Beehive Tavern and the Sagamore Inn. Your daytrips to the Cape can end back home at Chandler Cottage where you will be free from the traffic backups from vacationers exiting their weekly rentals and weekend homes.

If you want a taste of the big city, you can drive or take a train, an easy 40 miles into Boston, where there are concerts, plays, shopping, and sites to satisfy all ages and interests. The commuter rail can take your teens into Boston's popular Back Bay with Newbury Streets fascinating shops. Or go to Harvard Square in Cambridge, a lively fusion of culture, education, and exciting shops and bookstores.

A short drive to NewBedford's whaling museum and Newport's grand mansions make fascinating day trips. In nearby Carver there are cranberry bogs and beautiful scenery. There is a waterslide park in Buzzard's Bay, not far from a Liz Claiborne, Nine West, and Levi's outlet mall.
